The criminals come into our children’s rooms through the computers, through the smartphones, and we sit in the living room and watch TV.

Just because my child is at home at the computer doesn’t mean my child is safe. The criminals come into our children’s rooms through the computers, through the smartphones, and we sit in the living room and watch TV. We must finally understand that. «

Since 2016, «continued harassment via telecommunications or a computer system» (read cyberbullying) has been punishable by law, at least. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, 359 reports were received in this regard last year. 274 cases were cleared up. In 2018, 322 cases were submitted to the Ministry of Justice. 37 were charged. Only ten perpetrators were actually convicted. In the current year, one case has already become known in the media: A math student has been researching strangers for years on erotic websites, manipulating their profiles and, according to the court, «impaired their way of life». The Graz Regional Court pronounced a legally binding suspended sentence of two months. Unfortunately, it is only one of a few isolated cases.

Different reality of life

Many of those affected find it so difficult to address the taboo topic of cyberbullying that they are not reported. The fear of having to take more or not being understood is too great. They shy away from even talking to confidants.

This can also be seen in whether and to whom the children and adolescents turn when they have problems: Half of the students in the study by the German Alliance against Cyberbullying say they get support from their parents, but 16 percent turn to » to nobody «; 20 percent have already thought of suicide. «The reality of life for children and adolescents nowadays has absolutely nothing to do with that of adults.

And the moment I don’t accept the reality of my children’s lives and don’t concern myself with it, I don’t understand their problems, «says the late Joel’s mother.» A cell phone with Internet access is a weapon that can seriously damage children. «She had to come to this realization in the worst way a mother can imagine.

According to a survey by SOS Mitmensch, students in Vienna are very interested in

Girls and women rights

essay123. At the same time, however, the young people have «significant gaps in knowledge» about which actions against girls and women are prohibited in Austria and where to turn if you need advice or help. NGOs therefore called for an information campaign on Monday.

According to the survey (291 boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 15 at three new secondary schools and five AHS in Vienna), girls’ and women’s rights are important for 100 percent of female students and 96 percent of pupils. In addition, more than two thirds of those questioned want to find out more about equal rights for women and men and two thirds more about violence, bullying and possible protective measures.

Interest greater than knowledge

The interest is currently significantly greater than the level of knowledge: SOS Mitmensch asked a list of eleven actions whether these are prohibited or not prohibited in Austria – from the unwanted grip between the legs or on the buttocks to abortion and lower pay for women or forced sex in marriage. Only nine percent of those surveyed were able to correctly classify all points, with 90 percent it was at least six out of eleven. SOS Mitmensch warns that most of them would not have the necessary knowledge to recognize all situations in which their rights are threatened.

I don’t know where to get help

There is also little knowledge about support facilities: more than a third cannot name a counseling facility, two thirds do not know where to turn if they are confronted with harassment or violence at home or on the street.

«Considerable gaps in the teaching of knowledge in schools»

In this context, the survey found «considerable gaps in the teaching of knowledge in schools». According to this, 40 percent of boys and girls stated that they had never spoken about women’s rights in class or that they could not remember them. According to the survey, two thirds have never received information about advice centers. Around half of the respondents said that bullying and violence against girls and women or domestic violence were not yet an issue in school. About a third say they have not learned anything about equal rights for women and men in school.

Information offensive required

In view of these results, SOS Mitmensch calls for an information campaign in schools. «It takes awareness and strengthening work from an early age to ward off violations of girls’ and women’s rights. Gaps in knowledge make young people vulnerable,» said spokesman Alexander Pollak as quoted in the broadcast. Angelika Eisterer from the Association of Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelters sees an «appeal to us and above all to politics to invest more in comprehensive information campaigns and comprehensive violence prevention workshops»; Schoolchildren are an important target group. Margarete Bican, managing director of the Sprungbrett association, warns of the threat of budget cuts for institutions in the girls’ and women’s sectors.

The

BAT

it should continue to exist, but in which form is still being evaluated, said Interior Minister Herbert Kickl.

Interior minister

Herbert Kickl

(FPÖ) reaffirmed on Friday that the procedure around the

Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Fight against Terrorism (BVT)

«ran optimally and in accordance with the law». In an interview with journalists, he also definitely denied a super agency that was rumored in the media. «We don’t want a super agency,» said Kickl.

What’s next for the BVT?

The

BAT

it should continue to exist, but in which form is still being evaluated. Until further notice, the BVT will be headed by Dominik Fasching, the head of the department for strategic analysis. Fasching is currently busy with the evaluation, internal improvements are to be discussed. This is «an ongoing process». In addition, the BVT is still «a police authority and not a secret service».

In any case, a general overview of the work of the various services in Austria is very much desired, so that «someone coordinates» this. There is no need for an authority for this, so it would be enough «if you meet regularly,» said Interior Ministry Secretary General Peter Goldgruber.

«All cabinet employees are security cleared – by BVT»

In the BVT affair, according to Interior Minister Kickl, Goldgruber «did the only right thing and passed everything on to the economic and corruption prosecutor’s office». Kickl also made it clear that he would act the same in the event of allegations against a blue employee. «All cabinet employees are security cleared – by the BVT». If there had been a complaint, they wouldn’t be employees in his cabinet now. There was no breach of trust in friendly intelligence services in the cause.

Udo Lett was the «confidant» for witness statements

Meanwhile, «Der Standard» and «Die Presse» reported that Udo Lett, a protection of the constitution in Kickl’s cabinet, had acted as the «confidant» of two anonymous witnesses who testified against the accused BVT employees at the public prosecutor’s office. Previously, Kickl’s confidante Goldgruber had started the investigation against the BVT employees by referring the witnesses to the public prosecutor’s office. By the way, Lett is being traded as a possible successor to the suspended BVT boss Peter Gridling. Kickl had recently repeatedly denied an intended change of color or political power struggles over the BVT.

According to «Kurier», the BVT case is also accompanied by a judicial farce. Around the investigation into the passing on of North Korean passport blanks to the South Korean intelligence service by the BVT are said to have investigated two public prosecutor’s offices in parallel without knowing each other. The Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office examined allegations against the BVT and its employees in the North Korea case. And she apparently only found out from the media about the raid by the Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (WKStA).
